Here’s where you can get rid of items damaged in Wyandotte County flash flooding
Wyandotte County residents will have an opportunity to drop off their furniture, rugs and other items damaged in last week’s flooding during a free disposal event this weekend.
The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, will collect household items that residents are deeming unsalvageable after heavy rain flooded into area homes and businesses last week, it announced in a news release. Only KCK residents qualify. The event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Indian Springs, located near 47th and Orville in KCK.
People who want to get rid of mildewing or otherwise damaged property can do so on a first-come, first-served basis. The county’s waste management department will have dumpsters on site.
The Unified Government said residents can bring furniture, carpeting and rugs, mattresses, drywall, insulation and other water-damaged items, according to the release. Hazardous waste, electrical appliances, loose trash, non-damaged items and yard waste are not permitted, it said.
People who have yard waste, such as excess leaves and tree limbs, may qualify for curbside pick up or can take it to the city’s recycling and yard waste center, located at 3241 Park Drive. The Johnson County Landfill in Shawnee also accepts yard waste.
Residents must bring proof that they live in KCK, including a form of identification or mail that includes that resident’s name and address.
“We know many of our residents were hit hard by the recent storms,” Diana Miles, solid waste manager, said in the release. “This disposal event gives people a quick, no-cost way to get rid of water-damaged household items. We’re grateful to Waste Management for stepping up to help us make this happen.”
