1 dead, 2 others injured in triple shooting in Kansas City parking lot

Update: Police on Sunday afternoon identified the victim as 34-year-old Zavion N. Horn.

A triple shooting outside a business on Troost Avenue left one man dead and two others injured Saturday evening in Kansas City, a police spokeswoman said.

Officers responded shortly after 9:30 p.m. to a reported shooting in the 5500 block of Troost Avenue, according to Officer Alayna Gonzalez with the Kansas City Police Department.

When officers arrived, they found the shooting scene in a parking lot of a nearby business. However, officers learned three victims had already been driven to a hospital with gunshot wounds, Gonzalez said.

One of the victims, a man, was unresponsive when he arrived at the hospital and was pronounced dead by hospital staff, Gonzalez said. The two other victims, a woman and a man, had non-life-threatening injuries.

Police identified the victim as 34-year-old Zavion N. Horn. His 35th birthday would have been Monday.

A preliminary investigation found that two men had “an interaction” that escalated to gunfire, resulting in the three victims being struck by gunfire. The assailant ran from the area in an unknown direction.

Police do not have anyone in custody, and no suspect information was released.

Homicide detectives and crime scene personnel responded, gathered evidence, and spoke with witnesses.

The killing is Kansas City’s 65th homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. That compares to 57 homicides reported by this time last year.

This year’s homicides are slightly trailing the city’s deadliest year in 2023, when there were 185 killings in the city. By this time that year, there were 68 homicides.
