Man arrested after crashing stolen vehicle during police chase in Platte County
A man is in custody after allegedly fleeing sheriff’s deputies and crashing a stolen vehicle with narcotics in Platte County Tuesday.
Just before 11:30 a.m., a Platte County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted a traffic stop for improper registration on MO 45 Highway and Northwest Klamm Road. The man driving the vehicle allegedly fled, and a pursuit was initiated, said Capt. Jeffrey Shanks, a sheriff’s office spokesman.
The suspect drove east toward Interstate 29, reaching speeds of up to 90 miles per hour, Shanks said in a news release. The driver then lost control and crashed near North Chatham Avenue.
After crashing, the man fled the scene on foot, Shanks said. Witnesses told law enforcement they saw the man throw a firearm under another vehicle before he ran, the sheriff’s office said.
The crashed vehicle had been previously reported stolen out of Kansas City, Shanks said.
Deputies recovered a semi-automatic handgun and a large amount of currency from the crash scene. A felony amount of narcotics and narcotics paraphernalia was also recovered from the stolen vehicle, according to a news release.
Deputies established a search perimeter around a wooded area and deployed a K-9 to assist in locating the man. He was allegedly found hiding in a crawlspace by a concrete culvert.
The man was taken to a hospital before being transported to the Platte County Detention Center. He is placed on a 24-hour investigative hold pending charges from the Platte County Prosecutor’s Office.
Since the man has not yet been charged, The Star is not publishing his name.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
