Man, woman killed in ‘complex’ double homicide in Kansas City area home
A call asking police to “check-the-welfare” has moved into what police are calling a complex double homicide investigation after officers found two people dead inside a home in a Kansas City suburb, a police spokesman said Thursday.
Police responded Wednesday morning to a duplex in the 100 block of Northeast Churchill Street in Lee’s Summit. Once securing a warrant to enter, they found a man and a woman dead inside, said Sgt. Chris Depue, a spokesman for the Lee’s Summit Police Department.
Police required a second warrant, secured later in the day, to begin the investigation.
Initially, police were calling the case a death investigation. But as of Thursday morning, the investigation became a double homicide investigation, Depue said.
Detectives were at the home overnight, gathering evidence, Depue said. They were at the house until almost 2 a.m., so investigators are working through information and evidence.
“The scene and the case are both complex and will require a lot of work,” Depue said.
Police have a person in custody that they are calling a “person of interest.” Depue said there is no threat to the public at large.
Names of the victims were being withheld until family could be notified. Further details, including how the victims were killed, were not being released.
The deaths are Lee’s Summit’s first and second homicides of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. Last year, Lee’s Summit had one homicide.
