Man charged after fight outside Kansas City bar leads to possible brain injury
A man has been charged after a fight outside a bar in Kansas City’s River Market last week allegedly left a victim with a brain injury, including a fractured skull.
Teron D. Spagner, 24, was charged with first degree assault, armed criminal action and aggravated fleeing a stop or detention related to a fight he got into at 529 Walnut Street Wednesday.
According to court documents, police were called to Blue Line around 1:45 a.m., where a security guard said he witnessed three men, including Spagner, approach the male victim, who was with a woman, and get into an argument.
Police said video surveillance shows Spagner on the patio of the bar running to get a handgun from his car parked across the street, before allegedly pistol-whipping the victim in the face. The bar owner then yelled that police were on the way, causing Spagner and two others to flee into a maroon Nissan and a white Jeep.
The victim was bleeding profusely from the face and was admitted to the hospital with a fractured skull, two stitches in the head and a possible traumatic brain injury, according to court documents.
The woman with the victim told police she was his girlfriend, and that as they were leaving the bar when a group of five to six men started making comments towards her, which upset the victim, leading to a verbal dispute.
Around 3 a.m., officers saw both vehicles at a gas station. The white Jeep slowed down when police turned on their lights, but the Nissan allegedly sped westbound on Truman Road to Interstate 70, reaching 115 MPH, according to court documents.
Officers lost sight of the vehicle near Admiral Boulevard and Interstate 35, before the Nissan crashed into a pole near Independence Avenue and Paseo Boulevard. Spagner was seen getting out of the driver’s side, according to court documents.
The Nissan was later found to have been stolen on Feb. 11, police said, but Spagner said he bought it off of Facebook Marketplace. He allegedly told police he was out drinking because it was his brother’s death date and said the incident started because Spagler attempted to break up a fight between the victim’s girlfriend and someone else, and that the victim threatened the group.
Spagler told police he hit the victim with brass knuckles, but that he must’ve dropped them while running from his car and did not see police’s overhead lights attempting to pull him over, according to court documents.
Spagler will have a bond review hearing Thursday. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 23.
