A 22-year-old man is facing a charges after a group of people allegedly assaulted a woman at a gas station in Kansas City and stole her Jeep Grand Cherokee afterwards, according to court documents.

The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office filed charges earlier this month against Marcus L. Brown of Kansas City, accusing him of one count each of accessory to first-degree robbery, third-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon in the assault of a woman on Oct. 13 at a gas station in Kansas City.

Brown was being held Monday in Jackson County jail on $75,000 bond. A bond hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.

According to court documents, the victim was pumping gas the afternoon of Oct. 13 at a Kansas City gas station. The address of the gas station was redacted from the court filing.

The victim told police that she was approached by three people. One of them shouted, “That’s my brother!” to the victim as she saw a man, later identified as Brown, exit from a GMC SUV. The victim allegedly recognized him from an alleged previous assault, according to court documents.

The victim told police that the person who had shouted at the her allegedly punched her in the face. The victim tried to run, but fell.

Brown and the other person allegedly assaulted her while she was on the ground, according to court documents. Brown allegedly struck the victim in the head multiple times with a handgun.

A third person allegedly recorded the assault on his cellphone before grabbing an item from the victim and going through the rear passenger seat of the victim’s vehicle, according to court documents.

After the assault, the person who had yelled at the victim drove away in her vehicle. The victim said two people ran away from the gas station.

Detectives obtained surveillance video of the incident, which mirrored what the victim had told police. The video showed three people approaching the victim as she was inside the vehicle at the gas pump. Brown exited a GMC SUV and joined the others.

The woman got out of her SUV and one of the people punched her multiple times in the face, causing her to stumble, police said the video showed.

The victim tried to get away, but fell to the ground. Brown and two others surrounded her. Brown allegedly appeared to strike the victim 12 times in the head with a handgun and then stomped on the victim’s head with his right foot, according to court documents.

Another person also allegedly stomped on the victim’s head, causing her to go limp, court documents said. That person then searched the victim, ran to her Grand Cherokee and drove away.

Brown allegedly got back into his GMC and drove away. Meanwhile, the two others ran from the gas station.

Police were able to identify one of the persons involved from a still photo captured from additional surveillance footage and on Feb. 21, detained him for questioning.

While being questioned the next day, he told police that he went to the gas station with another friend. He told detectives that he had recorded the attack on his cell phone.

Detectives reviewed the cell phone video, which allegedly showed Brown striking the victim multiple times with a handgun, according to court documents.

On Feb. 25, detectives showed the victim a photo lineup and she identified Brown as the person who struck her in the head with the firearm during the robbery.

Lee’s Summit police arrested Brown in an unrelated case on March 8. Kansas City robbery detectives interviewed him the following day. When they asked if he frequented the area of the gas station, Brown requested an attorney.
