Two people were killed in a shooting that led to an hours-long standoff with law enforcement at a home south of Eudora.

A preliminary investigation shows a 52-year-old man shot and killed a 44-year-old woman at a residence in the 900 block of East 2300 Road, the Douglass County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. The man was later found dead inside the residence.

The Sheriff’s Office said a woman in distress, who was difficult to hear over the phone, called 911 just before 9 p.m. Thursday. An Eudora police officer initially responded to the home and heard a gunshot when he reached the front door, the release said.

Officers made contact with a man inside the home over the phone. The man was “overtly hostile” and threatened to shoot officers as he barricaded himself inside, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Sheriff’s Office, Lawrence Police Department and Kansas Highway Patrol used drones and other technology to see inside the residence. The technology helped officers determine the woman was deceased, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Law enforcement lost contact with the man after several hours of talking over the phone. They continually tried to re-establish contact with him, the Sheriff’s Office said, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Douglas County Sheriff Jay Armbrister said there were concerns about a possible threat of explosives inside the residence, so officers had to act methodically over several hours.

Just before 4:30 p.m. Friday, the KHP entered the residence and found the suspect deceased.

The man and woman were in a domestic relationship, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Identification of the victim and suspect will be released after family is notified, the Sheriff’s Office said.

“The Sheriff’s Office is with this family as they grieve during this horrifying time of tragedy,” Douglas County Sheriff Jay Armbrister said in a statement. “We wish them peace as they work through this painful time that no family should have to endure.”

Detectives and investigators were processing the scene Friday evening.
