2 teens arrested in fatal shooting of popular Kansas City Irish chef Shaun Brady
Two teenage boys were arrested within an hour after the popular Kansas City chef Shaun Brady was fatally shot outside the Irish restaurant he owned in the Brookside neighborhood, a police spokesman said Thursday.
The teens, along with the vehicle believed to have been used in the killing, were found a short distance away in Kansas City’s Midtown, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino with the Kansas City Police Department.
The teens were being held pending further investigation. Investigators were working with prosecutors to determine applicable charges, DiMartino said. The investigation into Brady’s killing is ongoing.
Brady owned and operated Brady & Fox Restaurant & Lounge, at 751 E. 63rd St., with chef and friend Graham Farris. He was taking out trash Wednesday just after 5 p.m. when when he encountered several people standing around a parked car, DiMartino said.
Brady was shot as an interaction between the group of suspects escalated, police said.
The shooting was witnessed by several people, DiMartino said, and was captured on surveillance cameras from nearby businesses.
The killing comes as the Brookside and Waldo neighborhoods have seen a rash of thefts and property crimes in recent months, along with other areas of town.
At a meeting earlier this month, about 200 residents and business owners met with police and community leaders to share their concerns about crime in the area. Police said at the gathering that property crime has been on the rise since 2021, and pointed to a trend of police staffing decreasing over the years.
Last week, police arrested two teenagers as suspects in a series of more than a dozen auto thefts and property crimes in the two neighborhoods and were continuing to look at whether they were linked to other crimes.
On Friday, a vehicle rammed into a CVS pharmacy in the Brookside neighborhood in which police believe was an attempted break-in.
Arriving officers found damage to the front of the building, but the vehicle was not still at the scene.
