The Kansas City Irish Festival announced Thursday morning that the traditional Irish Breakfast planned for this weekend has been canceled to honor local chef Shaun Brady who was shot and killed Wednesday evening.

Brady had been taking out the trash from his business, Brady & Fox Restaurant & Lounge, when he encountered several people standing around a parked car, according to Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a Kansas City Police Department spokesperson.

The shooting occurred as the interaction between the man and the group of suspects escalated. The shooting was witnessed by several people, DiMartino said, and was captured on surveillance cameras from nearby businesses.

The festival’s Facebook post said that Brady was a large part of the Irish Fest family, and that his business was a place where many in the community gathered.

“On behalf of the Kansas City Irish Fest Community, our hearts are absolutely broken to hear of the tragic loss of our dear friend and colleague Shaun Brady,” the post said. “...It was one of Shaun’s greatest gifts to bring people together with his culinary creations.”

Those who knew and loved Brady will be given the chance to gather and remember him, organizers said. Details on what’s planned have not yet been released.

Two male teen subjects were taken into custody about an hour after the shooting, police later said. The vehicle involved in the crime was also recovered.
