Teen killed in drive-by shooting in Avondale. Do you recognize the suspect’s truck?

A teenager is dead after being struck by gunfire in what investigators believe was a drive-by shooting in Avondale, a small city in Kansas City’s Northland.

Multiple callers dialed 911 about 9 p.m. Tuesday, reporting the sound of shots being fired in the Avondale area, which is northeast of North Kansas City Hospital, said Sarah Boyd, a spokeswoman for the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

Shortly after that, a caller reported that someone had been shot in the 3200 block of Northeast Excelsior Street. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Boyd said.

A preliminary investigation shows the killing appears to be a drive-by shooting. Investigators believe the suspected shooter was driving a dark blue or black 1996-98 Chevrolet Silverado 4X4 Z71 pickup with one of its headlights out.

Detectives were speaking to witnesses and gathering evidence. The Kansas City Police Department’s crime scene investigation unit was helping gather evidence.

The sheriff’s office released a video of the pickup believed to have been involved in the fatal drive-by shooting and asked anyone who recognizes the pickup or has information about the homicide to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
