An owner of a pickup died after being dragged while trying to prevent the truck from being stolen Wednesday afternoon in Kansas City, a police spokesman said.

The incident happened around 1 p.m. in the 2900 block of The Paseo, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino with the Kansas City Police Department. The area is near Troost Park.

A preliminary investigation revealed that as the assailant drove away, the victim was dragged by the truck. Eventually, the victim was dislodged and thrown to the pavement. DiMartino said the assailant left the scene in the truck without stopping.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. It’s unclear how the assailant got into the truck.

The investigation is ongoing.

The owner’s death is the 51st traffic fatality of the year. That compares to 46 deaths by this time last year.
