One man dead after he was found shot in vehicle near Blue Valley Park in Kansas City

One man is dead after after a shooting early Monday in Kansas City left him in a vehicle with life-threatening injuries.

Police were dispatched to 23rd and Topping on a traffic accident shortly after midnight that was upgraded to a shooting while en route. They found Nelson O. Medina, 29, shot inside of a vehicle and unresponsive, according to a news release from Kansas City police spokesperson Capt. Jake Becchina.

Medina was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and died around 5 a.m. Preliminary investigative findings indicate the shooting happened nearby in the area of Blue Valley Park. There is no known information on a suspect at this time, Becchina said. The investigation is ongoing.

This is the 44th homicide of the year in Kansas City, according to data tracked by The Star. The city had seen 51 homicides by this time last year, the deadliest year in recorded history.
