The ”Good Samaritan” killed while trying to help others involved in a crash earlier this week on Interstate 70 was identified as 50-year-old Robert Piper of Blue Springs, police said.

Piper was struck and killed after he exited his vehicle to help with a crash about 1:45 a.m. Monday in on eastbound Interstate 70 near Interstate 470, said Sgt. Jeff Buck, a spokesman for the Independence Police Department’s traffic safety unit.

A Chevrolet Equinox had been headed east on I-70 when it left the road. The SUV struck a rock embankment and the force of the crash re-directed it back onto the roadway where it rolled over, Buck said.

A Ford F-150 pickup truck, also headed east, struck the overturned Equinox.

Piper, who was not involved in the wreck, got out of his vehicle to help and was also struck, Buck said. Piper, as well as an occupant inside the Equinox who has not been identified, died at the scene.

The Equinox had been reported stolen out of Kansas City, Buck said.
