Two people died following a crash early Monday on an Independence highway.

Officers responded around 1:47 a.m. to the crash on eastbound Interstate 70 just west of Interstate 470, according to Sgt. Jeff Buck, a spokesman for the Independence Police Department.

A Chevrolet Equinox was traveling eastbound on I-70, when it left the roadway and struck a rock embankment. The impact pushed the SUV back onto the road as it overturned.

A Ford F-150 also driving on eastbound I-70 struck the overturned Chevrolet, leading an uninvolved driver to exit his vehicle and try to help.

As he left his vehicle, the uninvolved motorist was struck by another vehicle.

The uninvolved motorist and one person in the Chevrolet died at the scene. Other involved drivers stayed on scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Police said the Chevrolet was reported as a stolen vehicle out of Kansas City.

Eastbound lanes of I-70 were closed for several hours beginning at Lee’s Summit Road. Police expected the lanes to reopen around 6:30 a.m.

The crash remains under investigation.
