A 66-year-old scooter rider died weeks after after being critically injured in a hit-and-run crash involving two SUV’s that were racing each other on Troost Avenue in Kansas City, a police spokesman said.

The rider, identified as Jonathan K. Paul, was headed north on Troost Avenue on a blue and white Honda Metropolitan European-style scooter about 8:40 p.m. on Aug. 8 when he was struck and critically injured, said Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

A preliminary investigation found that two SUVs were racing each other at “very high rate of speed” north on Troost at the time of the wreck. One or both of the SUVs allegedly struck Paul near East 77th Street. The SUV drivers then fled without stopping, according to police.

In an attempt to identify the drivers, police released photos last week and asked for the public’s help in identifying an SUV they believe was involved in the crash. The photos were of a Hyundai or KIA SUV.

“Detectives still need the public’s help to identify the vehicle and the driver involved,” Becchina said.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
