Kansas City police on Monday released photos and asked for the public’s help identifying an SUV investigators think was involved in a hit-and-run crash that critically injured a person on a scooter last week.

The victim was struck and injured about 8:40 p.m. Tuesday while riding north on Troost Avenue on a blue and white Honda Metropolitan European-style scooter.

A preliminary investigation revealed that two SUVs were racing each other at high speeds when one or both of the SUVs struck the victim on the scooter, Capt. Corey Carlisle, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department, said Monday. Both vehicles fled without stopping.

The victim remains hospitalized in “very critical condition,” Carlisle said. The investigation is ongoing.

The department’s traffic investigations section released the photos in the hope that someone could identify it. The SUV is thought to be a Hyundai Santa Fe or Kia Sorento, Carlisle said.

After the crash, it turned east on 76th Street.

Anyone with information about the SUV or the crash is asked to call police at 816-482-8189 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
