A pedestrian who was hit by a driver fleeing police over the weekend in Kansas City’s Westport Entertainment District had to undergo an amputation of his leg after the crash, according to family.

Just before 3 a.m. Saturday, officers patrolling the area saw a white Dodge doing burnouts south of the Broadway Boulevard and Westport Road intersection, according to the Kansas City Police Department.

Officers turned on their emergency lights and tried to pull over the vehicle, but the driver sped north on Broadway Boulevard, police said.

The driver sped through the intersection, hitting a man who was trying to walk across the street, and then fled the scene, police said. The victim, who was identified by family as Augie Adan, was hospitalized with critical injuries.

Adan’s sister launched a GoFundMe on Sunday to help cover his medical expenses.

She said Adan was crossing the street to go home when he was hit.

At the hospital, despite undergoing orthopedic and vascular surgery, doctors ultimately had to amputate Adan’s left leg above the knee, his sister wrote. On Monday, doctors also operated on his broken pelvis.

As of Monday afternoon, loves ones had raised nearly $13,000 to help with the coming months of in-patient and out-patient care.

She said they’re also hoping to raise enough money to cover a new prosthetic leg for Adan.

“ ... It will be a long road to recovery,” she wrote. “ ... If you know Augie, you know he is a fighter and he will not give up.”
