A driver of a speeding SUV ran from a deadly head-on crash with another car Tuesday evening in Kansas City, a police spokesman said.

The hit-and-run driver was headed south on Troost Avenue at high speeds in a black Jeep Grand Cherokee just after 7 p.m. Tuesday. The driver of the Jeep crossed over the double yellow line and collided with a black Nissan Altima head-on near 85th Street, said Sgt. Jacob Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

The Jeep continued south on Troost, crashing with a gold Lexus ES 300 that was headed south. A motorcyclist also headed south on Troost laid his red Honda Shadow motorcycle down to avoid the collision. The driver of the Jeep then ran away, Becchina said.

The driver of the Altima was pronounced dead at the scene — the 22nd traffic fatality this year in Kansas City. By this time last year, there had been 31 people killed in traffic crashes, he said.

The motorcyclist was taken to a hospital and was said to be in stable condition. The driver of the Lexus refused medical treatment.

A description of the hit-and-run driver was not released. The crash remains under investigation.
