Woman killed Tuesday night after disturbance in Kansas City’s Lykins neighborhood: Police

Kansas City police opened a homicide investigation Tuesday night after a woman was found fatally injured outside of a residence in the Lykins neighborhood.

Police officers were dispatched around 9:15 p.m. to the 4300 block of East Seventh Street on a reported disturbance, said Officer Donna Drake, a department spokeswoman.

Responding officers then located a woman in the front yard of a residence suffering from apparent trauma, Drake said. She was taken by ambulance to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

What caused her fatal injuries was not immediately known to investigators, Drake said, and police were awaiting information from the medical examiner to determine how she died.

Police had no suspect information as of Tuesday night.

The killing marks Kansas City’s 31st homicide of 2023, according to data maintained by The Star. In 2022, the second-deadliest year in the city’s history, 171 were killed.

The killing Tuesday night was also the second reported in the span of a day in Kansas City. Around 4:30 p.m., a shooting unfolded in the parking lot of a Family Dollar in the 10400 block of Blue Ridge Boulevard that left one man dead.

Kansas City police continued to seek witnesses on Tuesday night in both killings. Anyone with information was asked to contact homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS.
