Two people were shot and killed Tuesday near East 27th Street and Prospect Avenue in Kansas City, according to police.

Officers were called to the area about 1 p.m. and found two men shot just west of the intersection, according to Sgt. Jacob Becchina, a Kansas City Police Department spokesman. Both men were unresponsive and were declared dead at the scene.

According to initial reports from police, two people ran from the shooting scene before police arrived and were detained about two blocks away. It was unclear what their involvement in the shooting may have been, Becchina said.

Many community members gathered, some grieving, along the three blocks of Prospect Avenue that police closed off. The area will likely remain closed for several hours, Becchina said.

“You can see emotions are very high right now,” Becchina said. “Detectives feel for family members in situations like this … We’re working through this as quickly as we possibly can for the sake of the family that may be involved as well as the neighborhood.”

The site of the shooting is near the KCPD’s East Patrol Headquarters and Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, where a church member ran outside after she heard gunshots.

The woman said she’s grown accustomed to hearing gunshots in her neighborhood.

Residents of a nearby senior center said they also heard multiple gunshots.

The killings on Tuesday marked the 147th and 148th homicides in Kansas City so far in 2022, according to data maintained by The Star. In 2021, the city saw a total of 157 homicides, representing the second-deadliest year in its history.
