The family of a 26-year-old man killed on Kansas City’s East Side has launched a fundraiser to help pay for funeral expenses.

On Sunday, Kansas City police discovered Sterling Simpson suffering from a gunshot wound in the 5200 block of East 29th Street, according to Capt. Leslie Foreman, a spokeswoman for the department. He was declared dead at the scene and there was no suspect information.

Family said on the GoFundMe page that Simpson had two daughters, who are two and three years old.

As of Wednesday morning, the page had raised about $530 of a $6,000 goal.

Simpson’s family members will also host another fundraiser selling pupusas, a Latin American flatbread stuffed with meat and cheese to raise additional money for the funeral. The fundraiser will start at 10 a.m. Saturday in the 2000 block of Denver Avenue, according to a post on social media.

Sunday’s killing was the 75th this year in Kansas City, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes police shootings. At the same time last year, the city had recorded 71 homicides.
