Double shooting leaves one man dead, another critically wounded in Kansas City

Update: Police on Monday identified the person killed in the shooting as 25-year-old William Jones.

One person was killed in a shooting and another critically injured Thursday in Kansas City.

The shooting was reported just after 4 p.m. in the 3500 block of Independence Avenue, said Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman with the Kansas City Police Department.

Responding officers found two men in the parking lot of the convenience store Express Stop who had been shot.

One man was unresponsive and declared dead at the scene, Becchina said. The second man had life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital where he was last in critical condition.

Becchina said an altercation inside the store between the two victims and several other people led to shots being fired inside the shop.

Detectives were canvassing the area to find witnesses and surveillance recordings.

This is the 14th homicide this month in Kansas City. So far this year, the city has recorded 49 homicides. The city had suffered 48 homicides at this point last year, which became the second deadliest year in the city’s recorded history.
