Man fatally shot outside Kansas City gas station Monday afternoon

A man was fatally shot Monday afternoon outside a Kansas City gas station and convenience store on the city’s southeast side, according to police.

Kansas City police officers were dispatched around 1 p.m. to the 8100 block of Bannister Road on a reported shooting, said Sgt. Jake Becchina, a police spokesman. There officers found an unresponsive shooting victim inside a car in the parking lot, Becchina said.

The gunshot victim was taken to a hospital and died there, Becchina said.

Police had no suspect information to immediately provide. The shooter fled the area in an unknown direction, though Becchina said detectives are hopeful someone near the busy intersection may have seen something that could help with the investigation.

The gas station and convenience store, Bannister Mart, is in a high-traffic area down the street from Harry S. Truman elementary school.

On Monday afternoon the convenience store remained blocked off by police tape as investigators searched through the crime scene. In the parking lot was a black sedan parked next to a gas station pump that was apparently involved in the shooting.
