Update: Police identified the victim as 62-year-old Samuel Zamudio.

A man was shot and killed Thursday night inside an apartment building on Kansas City’s southeast side in the Ashland Ridge neighborhood, according to police.

Police were dispatched around 9:15 p.m. to the 4000 block of Willow Avenue on a reported disturbance involving a weapon, Officer Donna Drake, a department spokeswoman, said at the scene. Officers then entered a building within the Willowind Apartments complex to find an adult man in a common hallway area who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Drake said.

Emergency medical personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene, Drake said.

Police had no suspect information to immediately provide Thursday night. The events that led up to the shooting also remained unclear, Drake said, but one person reported hearing gunshots followed by the sound of people running from the area.

Detectives were knocking on doors in search of possible witnesses as crime scene technicians collected evidence. Two hours after the shooting unfolded, police maintained a large presence over the area and kept the complex blocked off with crime scene tape.

Drake encouraged residents who may’ve heard or seen something related to the killing to call detectives. She noted helpful information may be reported discreetly if people are uncomfortable speaking with police from their doorways.

The homicide is Kansas City’s 17th so far this year, according to data maintained by The Star. There were 157 killings in 2021, the second-deadliest year in the city’s history.

Police are asking anyone with information about the killing to contact homicide detectives at 816-234-5043 or the through the anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest in the case.
