Teenager found fatally shot in Kansas City on Tuesday night, police say
A teenager was fatally shot in southeastern Kansas City on Tuesday night in the 7000 block of Agnes Avenue, according to police.
Officers were dispatched to the area around 7 p.m. after a 911 call was made by someone seeking emergency medical assistance for a person possibly experiencing a heart attack, said Capt. Leslie Foreman, a police spokeswoman.
Arriving officers spoke to the caller and were directed to a male on the ground outside of a residence, Foreman said. It was then learned that the teenager had been shot. Emergency medical personnel, who arrived around the same time as police, took the victim to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Several details were unclear, including the precise age of the victim, where he resided or how much time passed between the shooting and the initial 911 call.
Police had no suspect information on Tuesday night. Officers maintained a large presence on the scene as they blocked off the corner at 70th Street and Agnes Avenue while investigators combed the area for evidence and detectives sought potential witnesses.
Violent crime has trended upward across the city in recent weeks. Since Dec. 1, there have been a dozen homicides, most of them gun related, and several other nonfatal shootings, including two teenagers shot in the parking lot of the Ewing Marion Kauffman School last week during a high school basketball game.
The killing Tuesday marks the 150th homicide in Kansas City so far this year, according to data maintained by The Star. Last year there were 182 homicides, the deadliest in the city’s history.
Police are asking anyone with information about the killing to contact homicide detectives at 816-234-5043 or the anonymous TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest in the case.
