2 students in custody after fight led to stabbing at Schlagle High School in KCK
A student was stabbed when a fight erupted with two other students before school Tuesday at Schlagle High School in Kansas City, Kansas, a spokesman for Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools said.
The injured student was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were believed to be non-life-threatening, said Edwin Birch, executive director of communications and marketing for the district.
The two other students, a male and female, were taken into custody. The ages of the students and the grades they are in were not released.
The fight broke out shortly before 6:50 a.m. as students gathered to enter the building. Classes for the day had not yet started, Birch said. Some students were outside and saw the altercation. Police officers with the school district arrived broke up the fight.
Students who were on their way to school when the fight erupted were allowed to enter through the main entrance. The principal and administration gathered students in the cafeteria in the gymnasium to bring everything under control, he said.
“Right now where it stands is our campus police — the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools Police Department — is working with the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department in collaboration with an investigation,” Birch said. “Everything is still under investigation.”
Classes were being held as normal as possible on Tuesday, although the school alerted parents and were allowing them to come and pick up their teenagers if they wanted to do so.
The district was making counselors and its trauma team available to students or staff who had been traumatized by the violence and needed someone to talk to.
“Safety of our students again remains a top priority and we just want everyone to know that violence and this type of violence is not acceptable in our schools and will not be tolerated,” Birch said.
“We want to continue to do our best job to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment for all students and we need the community’s assistance in making sure that happens.”
