Family and friends gather to remember 18-year-old who was fatally shot in Kansas City
A small group gathered Tuesday afternoon in remembrance of Devin Jacobs, 18, who was shot and killed last month.
The vigil was held by KC Mothers in Charge at East 113th Terrace and Askew Avenue, where Jacobs was killed outside a house late at night on Oct. 24.
About 20 people came together in honor of Jacobs and released heart and star-shaped balloons. His family, including his father Christopher Jacobs and stepmom Rebecca Henderson, spoke about their son.
“Devin was my bonus baby, my stepson,” Henderson said. “Every time Devin saw you, he hugged you, he had this smile.“
The vigil showed just how loved Jacobs was and how many lives he touched, she said.
The family pleaded for people to come forward if they knew anything about the fatal shooting. Charges have yet to be filed.
Brandon Smith, a pastor with Graceway Church, led a prayer asking for love, comfort and support for Jacobs’ family.
Jacobs was the second person to die the night he was killed. Less than two hours earlier, police responded to a different shooting. A 38-year-old man who had been shot collapsed after walking into a gas station at 5901 Troost Avenue trying to find help. He died at a hospital.
