Kansas City police investigate triple shooting that left two critically injured
Three people were shot, two critically, Wednesday afternoon near Grove Park on the eastern edge of Kansas City’s 18th & Vine neighborhood, according to police.
All three victims are adults, two women and one man, and were in or around a parked SUV when they were shot, Capt. Josh Heinen of East Patrol said at the scene. The two women were the ones critically injured by gunfire, Heinen said, and all were taken by ambulance to an area hospital.
The shooting unfolded around 4 p.m. on Truman Road near the intersection with Benton Boulevard, Heinen said. Police believe the shooter or shooters were driving a white pickup truck, Heinen said, which pulled alongside the SUV and opened fire.
No other suspect information was immediately available.
Heinen noted the shooting took place on a very busy street during daylight hours and the area is surrounded by businesses.
“Any time a shooting occurs over populated areas such as this, the risks to citizens in the surrounding areas is a lot greater,” he said.
At the scene, crime scene technicians and uniformed officers investigated the area for evidence and interviewed witnesses. Truman Road was blocked off by police tape at Prospect Avenue and Benton Boulevard to the east into Wednesday evening.
The violence Wednesday is the latest in a string of multiple-victim shootings this month.
On Oct. 2, three people were fatally shot just before 4 p.m. near the intersection of 27th Street and Spruce Avenue. The victims were Kanen Wheaton, 24, Devon Key, 24, and Johnnai Owens, 23.
Three more were shot the following day outside the Ward Parkway Lanes in the 1500 block of West 89th Street. A 21-year-old man, Avery Williams, died several days later after being on life support in the hospital.
