Fights at Center Middle School draw concerns, prompt school officials to take action

Center Middle School officials alerted parents this week that students were involved in several fights that took place at the school.

The email did not say if any student were injured or disciplined.

School officials said they were made aware that a fight occurred between middle school students. The school is located in the 300 block of East 103rd Street. They also learned that a Center High School student witnessed the altercation, according to the email shared with The Star.

“It is unfortunate that this incident occurred. It is important that parents/guardians and families understand that we will work to resolve conflict at the building level,” according to the school’s email.

“We are working with staff, students and families to create a safe, responsible learning environment for our CMS community, but we need your help.”

District officials asked parents to talk to their children about the importance of navigating conflict. Additional support and resources such as counselors and social workers are available to those students who may need help.

No other details about the altercations were released.

“The safety and security of our students and staff are critically important to us. We are working with our security officers, building leaders and staff to ensure we are talking to students about ways to navigate conflict resolution,’’ the school district said in a written statement. “We want to provide learning opportunities for our students to understand how to manage emotions and disagree respectfully.”
