Lenexa police say man fired gun during foot chase after stolen car was spotted
Update: Lenexa police said the suspect was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon.
Police in Johnson County searched for a man who allegedly fired a gun during a foot chase after Lenexa officers checked on a stolen vehicle early Monday, according to police.
Officers blocked off the area near 87th Street and Pflumm Road but reopened it around 5:30 a.m. after they were unable to find the man.
The incident began when patrol officers spotted the stolen vehicle about 1:50 a.m. in the 8900 block of Haskins Street, said Master Police Officer Danny Chavez, a spokesman for the Lenexa Police Department.
When officers attempted to contact a man standing next to the vehicle. The man ran away and officers chased after him, Chavez said.
After the man rounded a corner behind a home, officers heard a single gunshot. None of the officers were hit and they did not return fire, Chavez said.
Police from other agencies responded to the area and helped Lenexa officers search for the man using police dogs and drones. The man, however, has not been found.
The man was described as being about 5 feet 10 inches, stocky build and shoulder-length dreadlocks. He was wearing black pants and a black sweatshirt.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Lenexa police at 913-477-7301 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
