Man shot by KC police after chase accused of beating, sexually assaulting girlfriend

A Kansas City man has been accused of sexually assaulting his girlfriend Saturday before he allegedly took police on a chase and was shot by an officer, according to prosecutors.

Pierre Bey-Crawford, 32, was charged with rape or attempted rape, armed criminal action and other crimes, according to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.

His girlfriend told police she was in her apartment in the 7600 block of Monroe Avenue when Bey-Crawford arrived and started hitting her. She tried climbing out of a window, but Bey-Crawford pulled her back inside, according to charging documents.

Bey-Crawford punched the woman in her stomach, back and legs, police said. He sexually assaulted and strangled her, according to a probable cause statement. She couldn’t breathe and fell to the floor, she told police.

“If the cops come, I’m gonna shoot you,” Bey-Crawford allegedly told the woman.

Police arriving at the apartment saw Bey-Crawford leaving in a vehicle and gave chase, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The vehicle crashed at 63rd Street and Swope Parkway, where Bey-Crawford tried to run away, the highway patrol said.

Officers ran after him. At one point, Bey-Crawford ran between two nearby homes and as he neared a fence line, he allegedly started digging around his waistband, Sgt. Bill Lowe, a spokesman for the highway patrol, said Saturday afternoon.

The officer ordered him to show his hands, but he didn’t comply, Lowe said. He then “directed a black object towards the officer,” who shot and wounded him, according to the highway patrol.

Bey-Crawford was taken to a hospital for treatment. He was unable to provide a statement, a detective wrote in court documents.

A handgun was found near where Bey-Crawford was taken into custody, police said.

Bey-Crawford has previous convictions for crimes such as kidnapping and domestic violence, including at least two prior incidents involving his girlfriend, according to police.

Prosecutors requested Bey-Crawford’s bond be set at $250,000.

He did not yet have an attorney listed in court records who could be reached for comment.
