Suspect taken into custody following hostage situation in Independence, police say

A hostage was rescued and a suspect was arrested following a standoff Sunday in Independence, according to police.

About 3 p.m., the Independence Police Department said it was working an “armed barricade” situation at a residence near East 35th Terrace South and South Kendall Drive.

In a Twitter post, police asked neighbors to remain patient as they tried to “end this peacefully.”

About 30 minutes later, the department said the situation had ended. The suspect was taken into custody.

Further information will be available when the suspect has been charged, police said.
