Kansas City police officer shoots at suspect after shots fired overnight in Westport

A man who was shooting at another person in Westport early Sunday was arrested after being shot at by a police officer, according to the Kansas City Police Department.

Around 2 a.m. Sunday, officers were patrolling the area of Westport Road and Mill Street when they were notified of a disturbance, Capt. David Jackson, a spokesman with the police department, said in an email.

The officers saw a suspect shooting at a person nearby, he said.

“One officer fired his weapon at the suspect in order to stop him from continuing to shoot at people,” Jackson said in the email.

The suspect was not hit by the gunfire, Jackson said. Instead, he began to run away and was taken into custody soon after.

The person the suspect was shooting at was not injured either, police said.

A gun was seized at the scene, Jackson said. Police did not immediately say how many bullets were fired by the suspect or by police.

Gun violence will be the subject of a new, statewide journalism project The Star is undertaking in Missouri this year in partnership with the national service program Report for America and sponsored in part by Missouri Foundation for Health. As part of this project, The Star will seek the community’s help.
