Masked person who flashed gun during Wisconsin high school Zoom class traced to KC

Police have traced a person posing as a Wisconsin high school student who flashed a gun during a Zoom class to a Kansas City internet address.

The incident took place Thursday morning during a virtual class at Brookfield Central High School, in Brookfield, Wisconsin.

A participant pretended to be one of the actual students in the class and was allowed into the Zoom meeting, said Chris Thompson, a spokesman for the School District of Elmbrook.

The participant, who was wearing a mask, mooned the class and flashed a handgun.

One of the teachers removed him from the meeting, Principal Brett Gruetzmacher said in a statement sent to parents.

The district determined that there was no direct threat and that the IP address was located in the Kansas City area.

“The Brookfield Police Department will be working with Verizon and the local police in Kansas City to locate the individual and we will pursue criminal charges,” Gruetzmacher wrote.

The Kansas City Police Department referred questions about the investigation to Brookfield officials.

Brookfield Police Department Capt. Chris Garcia said the person displayed the firearm and pointed it at the camera.

By Wisconsin statute, the person could potentially face charges including disorderly conduct, making a terroristic threat and firearms-related charges, Garcia said.

The investigation is ongoing.
