Olathe man to be charged in Kansas City area crash that killed teen, injured one: police

An Olathe man is expected to be charged in a fiery June crash that left a teenager dead and another seriously injured in Edwardsville, Kansas, police said Wednesday.

The man, 38, was arrested near Dallas and is awaiting extradition back to Wyandotte County to face charges of second-degree homicide and aggravated battery, according to the Edwardsville Police Department.

The June 5 wreck at Interstate 435 and Kansas Avenue killed Caden Payne, 14, and seriously injured a 19-year-old man, police said.

Citing a preliminary investigation, police previously said a pickup truck, driven by the suspect, changed lanes and struck a semi-truck. The pickup then spun out of control, hit a bridge pillar and burst into flames, according to police.

The suspect did not appear to have been charged in Kansas as of Wednesday afternoon.
