27 dead cats found buried in Sedalia backyard. Police say nearly 80 removed from home
Police and animal shelters Wednesday removed nearly 80 cats from a home in Sedalia and found about 27 buried in the backyard.
The investigation began when a tipster said there could be unhealthy animals inside a home in the 1700 block of South Prospect Avenue, according to the Sedalia Police Department. It was later determined a “large number” of unwell animals were there, police said in a press release shared on Facebook.
Many of the cats recovered from the the 941-square-foot house needed medical attention. Some have died, police said.
Dead kittens were discovered in bags at the home, authorities said.
The buried cats were found in several places outside, according to police. About 20 were believed to be kittens.
Two people were arrested and taken to the Pettis County Jail pending charges of animal abuse and neglect, police said. They did not appear to have been charged as of Wednesday afternoon.
The rescued cats were taken to the Sedalia Animal Shelter. Those healthy enough were taken to shelters across Missouri for adoption.
Sedalia is about 85 miles southeast of downtown Kansas City.
