Bystander killed in KC police chase after armed carjacking suspect runs stop sign
Update: The fatal crash victim was later identified by police as Ricky Donaldson, 52, of Kansas City.
A man was killed Monday night during a police chase after a carjacking suspect ran a stop sign and crashed into a passing vehicle.
Late Monday night, police located an occupied vehicle that had been taken in an armed carjacking earlier in the evening, said Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department, in an email Tuesday.
The driver fled when officers attempted to stop the vehicle at Lister Avenue and East 23rd Street, Becchina said, adding that the officer had their emergency lights and sirens on at the time.
The chase continued one block to East 23rd Street and Lawn Avenue where the suspect drove northbound through a stop sign and crashed into a westbound vehicle at about 11:10 p.m., police said.
The male driver of the westbound vehicle was declared dead at the scene, Becchina said. A passenger was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Three people were arrested at the scene and also taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police are investigating both the crash and the robbery. Becchina said full traffic investigations usually take between four and six weeks to complete.
