73-year-old Independence woman found dead in crash nearly a week after she went missing

A 73-year-old Independence woman reported missing last Thursday was found dead Wednesday at the scene of a car crash, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Rachel Gillmore was reported dead just before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday after her body was found at a crash scene near Southwest Lake Tapawingo Lane, north of U.S. 40, according to the Highway Patrol’s traffic crash report.

Gillmore was driving a 2018 Silver Kia Rio eastbound on U.S. 40 when she crossed over Southwest Lake Tapawingo Lane, according to the report. Her car ran off the right side of the road, then hit a tree, causing the vehicle to go airborne. It struck more trees before coming to a stop in a ditch. The report does not specify what day the crash occurred.

Family who reported Gillmore missing told Independence Police that she left her home in her Kia for a doctor’s appointment Thursday.
