Woman charged, suspected of fatally stabbing her mother in Kansas City home
A 20-year-old Kansas City woman who struggled with mental illness was charged Thursday for allegedly stabbing her mother to death in her home on Ward Parkway Plaza over the weekend, according to court records.
Alina Bell faces felony charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action for the death of 56-year-old Stacy Bell, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office announced in a news release Thursday.
Kansas City police were called to the home in the 8100 block of Ward Parkway Plaza around 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Bell was one of six people killed in Kansas City’s deadliest weekend this year.
According to court records, Stacy Bell was supposed to pick a family member up from the airport on Saturday but never arrived. After she failed to return his call, Stacy Bell’s brother told police he went to her home Sunday. He called police after seeing an unresponsive woman through the window and noticing that the back door was open.
When officers responded to the scene, prosecutors allege, they found Stacy Bell lying on her back in the living room, dead from apparent stab wounds. The home’s back door was open but there was no sign of force, records said.
Several empty prescription bottles were found on the back porch
Officers found Alina Bell in a bedroom lying in what appeared to be vomit and “screaming incoherently,” charging documents said. Alina Bell had blood on her clothes and body, according to the documents. Concerned that she had overdosed on medication, police had her taken to a hospital.
Medical records indicated that Alina Bell was receiving treatment for mental illness, police said.
When searching the house, police found a large kitchen knife on a chair, blood-covered paper towels in the trash and blood in a downstairs sink, court records said.
A phone police suspected belonged to Stacy Bell showed a video taken around 6 p.m. Saturday of Stacy Bell attempting to calm her daughter as she screams and the two discussing Alina Bell’s use of acid, court documents said.
Alina Bell’s cousin told police that Stacy Bell told her early Saturday afternoon that Alina Bell was “having trouble” and that she was going to pick her up from her apartment and bring her to the house.
When the cousin visited the house around 10 p.m., she told police, Stacy Bell told her that Alina Bell was using acid, according to court records. At that point, she said, Alina Bell began screaming, saying that she did not use acid and telling her cousin to leave.
Later that night, the cousin told police, she spoke with Alina Bell over Snapchat. When she reached out again the next day, she said, Alina did not answer.
When police attempted to question Alina Bell at the hospital about her mother’s death, court records said, she “rambled incoherently.”
Alina Bell is being held in the Jackson County Detention Center at $100,000 bond.
