One man charged after road rage leads to shooting on I-470, Lee’s Summit police say

Update 3:40 p.m. July 31: Joseph W. Terry, 54, of Lee’s Summit was charged Friday afternoon with unlawful use of a weapon, first degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action.

Road rage led to a shooting Thursday evening on Interstate 470, Lee’s Summit police said.

According to police, two vehicles were exiting eastbound I-470 to U.S. 50 and Pryor Road about 5:30 p.m. Thursday. One pulled in front of the other and braked. The trailing car couldn’t stop because of slick conditions, rear-ended the other and spun out to the shoulder.

A suspect driving the vehicle that was rear-ended then accelerated into the driver’s side of the other car before firing several shots from a handgun into the car, according to the Lee’s Summit Police Department.

Police said the victim had a small graze wound from a single bullet and minor injuries from the crash.

The suspect was arrested without incident, police said.

Detectives will present the case to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office on Friday morning.
