KCK woman sentenced to life in prison for murdering estranged husband in Leavenworth

A Kansas City, Kansas, woman was sentenced to life in prison for murdering her estranged husband in 2017.

Barbara Frantz, 54, will serve at least 25 years before she is eligible for parole, Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson announced Tuesday in a news release.

On Jan. 27, 2017, Gary Frantz was found with five gunshot wounds at a parking lot in downtown Leavenworth.

As he was dying, he told police his wife had shot him.

Police found shell casings in Barbara Frantz’s apartment that matched casings discovered at the scene.

She contended that her son carried out the shooting, but was convicted by a jury in July 2018.

Sentencing became delayed after her defense attorneys filed a motion for a new trial.

“We’ve waited a long time to have this case sentenced,” Thompson said. “We are happy to see her sentenced, especially to give some resolution to Gary’s family through such a terrible tragedy.”
