Police search for hit-and-run driver after man found lying in Kansas City street dies

Kansas City police were searching for a hit-and-run driver Tuesday after a man found lying in a Kansas City street died at the hospital, police said.

Police responded about 9:30 p.m. Monday to a hit-and-run involving a pedestrian and found the injured man lying in the street at 12th Street and Hardesty Avenue, said Sgt. Jacob Becchina, a Kansas City police spokesman, in an email.

The man was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead, Becchina said.

Investigators determined that the man, a 58-year-old from Kansas City, had either been hit by or had fallen out of a pickup truck that was headed south on Hardesty.

Police released a photo of a pickup, which was pulling a trailer, that was caught on traffic camera as it passed through the intersection at Truman Road and Van Brunt Boulevard.

Police were looking to talk to the owner and driver of the truck in connection to the hit-and-run crash.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Kansas City Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Section at 816-482-8190 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).

The man is Kansas City’s 54th traffic death this year. That compares to 37 traffic-related deaths in the city by this time last year.
