Video shows men who beat, shot man in attempted robbery as KC police seek suspects

Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying two people who assaulted, shot and attempted to rob a man outside a Kansas City home in June.

Law enforcement was called to a shooting scene just before 10:30 a.m. on June 25 near East 31st Street and Highland Avenue, Kansas City Police Department spokesman Sgt. Jacob Becchina said in an email Monday.

Video from a doorbell surveillance camera, shared by police, showed the attack.

Two men, both seen wearing white shirts, appeared to walk up behind another man who was standing near a porch petting a small dog. One of the attackers hit the man over the head, then both assaulted him as he fell to the ground. The victim later stood up and stepped back with his arms up.

The victim was struck in the head with a gun and shot in the arm, Becchina said. He has since been released from the hospital.

Police said nothing was stolen, but a witness told officers the suspects went through the victim’s pockets before they left the scene on foot.

The motivation behind the attempted robbery is still under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Kansas City Police Department’s Robbery Unit at 816-234-5230 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).

Gun violence will be the subject of a new, statewide journalism project The Star is undertaking in Missouri this year in partnership with the national service program Report for America and sponsored in part by Missouri Foundation for Health.
