Bicyclist injured after being struck by car Sunday morning in Independence

Update: Independence police on July 20 reported that the cyclist, Christopher B. Fitzgerald, of Kansas City, died from his injuries on July 14.

A bicyclist was hit by a car early Sunday morning while crossing U.S. 40 Highway, Independence police said.

The bicyclist was crossing the highway east of Crysler Avenue when an eastbound car ran into the 50-year-old cyclist, Sgt. Steven Boles, a spokesman with the Independence Police Department, said in an email Sunday. The exact time of the crash was not immediately available.

The bicyclist, a man, was taken to the hospital with “significant injuries,” Boles said.

The driver of the car was not injured.
