A 4-year-old Kansas City boy was in critical condition Saturday after a driver hit him with a pickup truck and then tried to leave the scene, police said.

The child was trying to cross the street about 9:22 p.m. near 16th and Benton, police said, when he was hit by the northbound pickup truck.

Witnesses told police the driver tried to leave the scene but was stopped by bystanders.

The child was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The boy remained in critical condition as of 4 a.m. Sunday, according to Officer Doaa El-Ashkar, a Kansas City Police Department spokeswoman.

The incident was under investigation by the police department’s traffic crash unit.
