Suspect who shot and critically injured KCPD officer is identified as Grandview man
A man who shot and critically wounded a Kansas City police officer Thursday, before himself being killed by police, has been identified as Ky Johnson, 31, of Grandview, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.
The patrol identified Johnson in a message posted to Twitter Friday morning.
Johnson was killed in a shootout with police Thursday afternoon near 31st Street and Van Brunt Boulevard, according to the patrol. Police were called to a McDonald’s where the suspect was allegedly waving a gun.
Police chased Johnson when he ran away. According to the patrol, Johnson turned and opened fire on the officers, striking one in the head. A second officer fired back, killing Johnson, highway patrol officers said.
The wounded officer was brought to Truman Medical Center for emergency surgery. The officer has been with the department about 2 1/2 years, Kansas City Police Chief Rick Smith said.
Shortly before 10 p.m., the officer was out of surgery and in the intensive care unit in stable condition, according to Sgt. Jake Becchina, a department spokesperson.
Becchina said the officer had a “serious injury.”
