KCK police officer charged with sex crimes against child, district attorney says

A Kansas City, Kansas, police officer is accused of child sex crimes, Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree announced at a press conference Wednesday.

The officer, Nicholas J. Schafer, 36, was charged Wednesday with two counts of felony aggravated indecent liberties with a child for lewd fondling or touching of a child under the age of 14, according to court records.

The charges, Dupree said, stemmed from a single incident that did not occur while Schafer was on the job.

The victim, Dupree said, was known to Schafer.

Schafer is currently on un-paid administrative leave from the police department, Kansas City, Kansas, Interim Police Chief Michael York said in an emailed statement.

The allegations against Schafer, York said, were forwarded to the department’s Internal Affairs Division as soon as the department was made aware of the incident. That investigation, he said, led to Wednesday’s charges.

“I hold myself and my employees to the highest standards. All complaints against members of our Department are investigated thoroughly,” York said.

Schafer is being held in the Wyandotte County Detention Center. His bond is set at $250,000.
