Man charged after shooting, fleeing incident ends in deadly crash in Independence

A 22-year-old man has been charged after he allegedly shot at a car, fled on highway U.S. 24 and crashed into another car, killing the driver earlier this week, prosecutors announced in a news release.

The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office said Thursday that Da’qon J. Sipple is charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action in connection to the shooting and fatal wreck, which occurred Wednesday in Independence.

Prosecutors allege Sipple shot into his ex-girlfriend’s vehicle as she was leaving in the 800 block of North Emery Street.

The ex-girlfriend told police she parked down the street and called 911. She then saw Sipple leaving in a vehicle and decided to follow him, according to court records.

Sipple fled the area, driving at a high rate of speed on U.S. 24, charging documents said.

At the intersection of U.S. 24 and Sterling Avenue, Sipple ran a red light and struck another vehicle, killing the driver, court records state. The victim of the wreck was identified as Mari McElyea.

Prosecutors requested bond be set at $250,000.

An attorney has not yet been listed for Sipple, who was hospitalized after the crash.
