Shooting, chase between 2 vehicles ends in fatal crash in Independence, police say

A shooting and a chase in Independence ended in a crash that left one person dead Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The incident started around 2:30 p.m. as a domestic disturbance with shots fired at a home in the 800 block of North Emery Street, according to a news release from Independence police.

Police were called to the scene. Before officers arrived, those who were involved in the incident left the home and “began chasing each other in two different vehicles,” police said.

One of the cars, traveling westbound on U.S. 24, went through an intersection at Sterling Avenue and crashed into a southbound vehicle that was not involved in the shooting, police said.

The driver of the uninvolved vehicle was killed as a result of the crash. The victim’s identity has not been released pending family notification.

Two additional vehicles were involved in the crash, and other people were injured, police said, but the extent of their injuries was unknown Wednesday afternoon.

Those who were involved in the shooting were taken into custody at the crash scene.

A vehicle involved in the initial incident had multiple bullet holes, but police said no one was shot.

The shooting and crash remain under investigation by the police department.
