Excelsior Springs man charged after gas station shooting leaves 1 seriously injured

A 25-year-old Excelsior Springs man has been charged with first-degree assault in connection to a shooting that occurred at a gas station Wednesday.

Clay County prosecutors also charged Dylan G. Townsend with armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Excelsior Springs police were called to the gas station in the 1900 block of West Jesse James Road about 3:48 p.m. Wednesday to investigate the shooting.

Officers found a 32-year-old man who had been shot in the head. He was taken to a Kansas City-area hospital with serious injuries.

The suspected shooter, later identified by police as Townsend, was taken into custody at the scene.

A preliminary investigation showed the shooting may have stemmed from an incident involving a female acquaintance who was at the scene.

Townsend remains in custody. Bond was set at $500,000. An attorney has not yet been listed for him.
